Social Network PR

Let's talk about social networking as a PR tool. First, there is no point in having a Twitter, Facebook or any other profile unless you are going to keep it active. We constantly see profiles that have not been logged into or updated in months (sometimes even years). If you are not going to log in daily or at the very least weekly, don't bother having one. It will just send the wrong message. If you are a celeb -- fans will think you don't really care about them. If you are in business -- people will think you are disorganized and neglectful. Messages and add requests received on a social network profile must be handled in a timely manner (just as if they came from your primary web site).

To present a good image, you must also guard your content. Don't accept all add requests. That will turn your profile into nothing more than a joke. When it comes to social networking friends, it's about quality, not quantity. You must make the time to actually screen them, or again don't bother having a profile. Don't accept irrelevant add requests either. In other words, make the effort to keep it all real. You should also set your preferences to pre-screen all comments people may want to post on your profile. Decline anything not in keeping with the image you want to present. Don't allow raunchy sexual photos or foul language, and don't allow random people to use it for their own advertising. Otherwise, your profile will quickly become irrelevant and boring. Cece Vance ~ Publicist

SoNewYork Networking

Everyone knows it takes many years to build powerful media contacts. That's why having a publicist in the right place is such a critical element for publicity success. Much of this business is about networking. It's about building strategic connections and developing personal relationships. It's about going to the right events and awards shows, schmoozing at parties, taking producers to lunch, etc. If you're not located where the media elite mingle -- those things are pretty tough to do. The same holds true for PR. Your publicist should be where the action is. Cece Vance~ Publicist

Promotional Performances

We have been asked about promotional gigs for pop music artists. Today, whether you are signed or indie, you have to do more than just offer your tunes for sale on the web and perform at local clubs. You have to get noticed by both the media and the music industry. One effective way to do that is to perform at places where the real decision makers will pay attention. Playing at the local mall in your home town probably won't accomplish that. Like any other new business, music requires an initial investment. Promotional performances and hiring an established publicist are part of that. Be sure to have the show professionally video taped for use on the web, and in cross promotions. Proper accommodation, and hospitality for the media must also be provided. Remember, without media coverage the event will not be effective. Promotional performances in strategic places are part of the game for every successful artist in the music biz. The beginners and the established stars all do them. Cece Vance ~ Publicist

Dear Aspiring Rap Superstar & Friend,

I'm sure you sometimes stare at the t.v. in disbelief just like me when watching some of the hip hop music videos, and especially some of the most recent music award ceremonies.Like you, I scratch my head and ask,
"How did this guy win a Grammy?"
"How did this garbage go platinum?"

In all honesty, it has probably made you and me both think about doing something else sometimes. Let me be clear about what I do...I am not a rapper, but I am a Publicist who works with rappers and singers from all over. So even though I don't rap like you, I completely understand the disapointment you feel as a rap artist. After analyzing the industry, I have figured out why those garbage rappers succeed. I'm sure you already know the answer as well as I do. Yes, there are a number of things that contribute to their success... Without naming any names (although I'm sure you can probably guess some of the rappers I"m talkin' about), there are a number of rappers who have won awards, and even Grammys. Because in some of these cases, having super hot hip hop beats is what allows some of these garbage rappers to survive. Now, some artists, most artists make it because of hard work and a willingness to invest in themselves as much as possible.
Marketing, my friend, is another key to success as a rap/hip hop artist. Cece Vance ~ Publicist

From The BlackBerry "Invest"

Lately I have been getting a lot of requests to do work for artists on Twitter and BBM. But then I wonder to myself, why would I do work for you when you don't do work for yourself? Don't get me wrong, I have worked with the bottom of the bottom and have done work for people who are recording straight off of their PC with no real studio! But EVERY LAST ONE of them already had exhausted their own options of what they could do on their own before they came to me for my help. While I admit, I love making money, I am an honest (person). I will not let anybody compromise what I have built because they have a half a** work ethic. I refuse to invest my time, energy, advice and creativeness into an artist who isn't willing to invest in themselves. I personally believe that it is easy to get on. If this is something that you truly want (a deal or whatever your goal may be) you will invest your time and all your resources to making that happen. I am sick of (dudes) who rap on the side and feel like they should be on...look at most NBA or NFL players for example, they lift, run, eat well, and dedicate their lives to doing all of the necessary things they need to do to make it to the league at all costs. Apply that same work ethic to your craft and you too will be able to reap the benefits of your hard work. Cece Vance ~ Publicist

Feeling a certain type of way

As i sit here and write this from my blackberry I'm thinking about  Obstacles I go Thur as a Publicist. Artists being late to Interviews, Not Investing, NO SHOWS, NO CALLS. I ask myself is this really worth it. Don't get me wrong half of the artists don't even no what a Publicist is? hummmmm.... But at the end of the day i Love being a Publicist.... Cece Vance

What’s the difference between an agent, manager, and a publicist? Like, what do they do?

Agent–represents you to various known or unknow casting agents or productions. Is not engaged constantly. 10-15%

Manager–tells you what scripts to take, see that arrangements for travel, hotels and all business is handled. Does a few agent functions like hooking you up. Constant attention. More pay.

Publicist–a company or person who keesp the word out about your work after you’re established. Gets you in the "best" publications or gets you seen. Also helps prevent you from messing up in public. Salaried or by the job

What is the PAY for Publicist?

So when we ask for 500.00 - 2,000 a month we are short selling ourselves please pay close attention to this chart! Invest in yourself

Top Five Reason You need a Publicist

Reason #1: You Need Exposure.

In order to sell something, the public needs to know about it. You have something that you are certain that the rest of the public needs to know about and there is no better way to spread the word about you or your product than with public relations. The amount of encouraging attention that a magazine interview or news article gets cannot compare to that of an advertisement. There is an extra sense of authority when people hear about something from a TV show or radio show. It is notably influential. Although both ads and PR are effective and necessary to properly market you or your product, you really cannot do with public relations.

PR efforts can expose you to all kinds of media. With the proper publicist, you will get the chance to tell the world whatever you think they should know, in the most effectual manner. For example, a band can land a radio interview on a hot morning show and discuss about the importance of the message behind their new album. A chef can be featured in a trade magazine and get the chance to tell the public about his new television program. The public’s interest is instantaneously provoked.
Reason #2: Advertising Costs Too Much

Advertisements are influential, important and necessary. Although advertising can be an excellent way to tell the public about why they need your product, it does not come without a significant price. Even ads in local magazines can cost thousands of dollars. Plus, since the public knows that the ads are coming straight from the business, they lose their reliability. Through the use of quality public relation efforts, a publicist can reach the public for a small fraction of the cost of an ad. Considering the cost and credibility factor, PR is much more cost-effective and efficient.
Reason #3: You Can't Do it Yourself, There's No Time!

There are a million things to do before one can achieve true success.Public relations are very time consuming. There are many words to speak, sentences to write and ideas to generate. Very few people have the time to handle an effective PR campaign, market their product and conduct “business as usual.” A publicist can take your mind off of the promotional aspects so that you can do whatever it is that you do best.
Reason #4: What is a Media Kit? I Don't Have a Clue!

Do you know how to pitch a producer? Very few people know what they need to do to successfully launch a powerful PR campaign. The time spent on learning every procedure, tactic and secret in addition to the probability of failing is not worth the money you save being your own publicist. Sure, anyone can write their own press release… but do they know all the rules? Do they understand the proper format? Do they know the tricks of the trade? Can they come up with an effective angle? Publicists can see things from a different point of view—and not just from the company’s perspective. It is vital to try and see everything from the public’s standpoint.
Reason #5: Adds Credibility.“Have your people contact my people.”

Believe it or not, having a publicist on staff boosts your credibility. This is basically for two reasons. First, it shows that you are serious about your product. If you did not believe it could be a success, you would not hire someone and pay for them to tell the world about it. Second, it makes you look and feel important, which in turn gives you the confidence you need to thrive.

What is a Publicist?

A publicist is a person whose job is to generate and manage publicity for a public figure, especially a celebrity, a business, or for a work such as a book, film or album. Most top-level publicists work in private practice, handling multiple clients.
In the world of celebrities, unlike agents or managers, publicists typically take a monthly fee for serving a client (whereas agents and managers tend to take a percentage of their client's gross income). Publicists can be at local, regional or national level. They can also have special expertise in areas such as entertainment or literary publicity.
One of the publicist's main functions is to generate press coverage on behalf of clients and to serve as the bridge between clients, their public and media outlets. A publicist writes press releases, manages campaigns and performs other public relations functions. It usually takes many years to develop the media contacts, experience and relationships necessary to be an effective publicist.
Some publicists specialize in representing 'ordinary' members of the public to procure the maximum possible fee for stories they wish to sell to newspapers, television stations and magazines.
